EnglishThe English Story

EnglishIn 1903, brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright wanted to test a powered airplane. They worked near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Strong winds and many failed tests made the work difficult, but they continued. On December 17, Orville lay on the airplane. At 10:35 in the morning, the machine moved along a wooden rail and the airplane took off. It flew for twelve seconds and traveled about 120 feet, or 36 meters. For the first time, a powered airplane flew in a controlled and sustained way. The brothers did not stop there. They made three more flights that day. Their careful tests showed that a heavier-than-air machine could fly with a pilot in control.
